Atrium Birmingham - Developed the Design and Built
by Darketech
|
 |
| The elliptical main stair cores shown in the pictures are of a mild
steel construction each weighing 7 tonnes. |
| Balustrades are stainless
steel with timber treads and hand rails. |
Each completed stair cost approximately £100,000. |
 |
 |
| Due to the complexity of the core shapes (illustrated in the
drawings) and the need for extreme accuracy and a high standard of
finish, the cores were prefabricated at the Stilton works. |
They were then transported to Birmingham. As each
core was approximately 12 Metres x 3.6 Metres and a "Notifiable
Load", police designated a route into Birmingham City Centre. Fleet
Street was closed for the operation. |
 |
Whilst "Developing the Design" the 7 tonne
cores were superimposed onto the client’s CAD drawings to ensure that
we could get them into the building in one piece.
We agreed a route through a large window, but then
had to design and build two temporary cranes inside the building to move
the structures to their final position in the Atrium.

Once the cores were upright, we then used the same
cranes to winch the 2.5 tonne prefabricated landings into position. |
